Is it safe for aquarium life life forms2007-11-24 23:11:38

i have a big fish tank and i want to replace the gravel that i have with regular sand...well seeing how big the tank is, its going to cost me alot of money to buy sand from any pet store but a friend of mine told me to buy kids PLAYSAND, which is way cheaper...IS THIS SAFE?

It is not recommended to use 鈥減lay sand鈥?or smaller than sugar sized granule sand. The potential issues here are that the lower levels become heavily compacted while the top layer is very easily kicked up. Play sand is also not always inert causing potential Ph changes and it is not consistently fully dried creating room to grow mold and parasites

I was into land hermit crabs and play sand was okay, but you should check for anything in the sand also smell it there should be nooo order, I know this is not about hermit crabs, come to think of it also my friend did it and it look great, and worked out fine!!

I wouldn't use it for fear of things that are safe for us being in it but not safe for the fish. Like salt is o.k. for us, but not for freshwater fish.They may have also used chemicals to make it safe for us that are fatal to fish.

Play sand is perfectly safe as long as you rise it a lot to get all the non heavy sand out of it.

There are also some other sands that are cheap also but you might have to find them in large or small (Recommended) fish stores that might cost $20 per 20 lb. And it is also really good sand especially better than play sand.

Now thats a real deal.

don't use regular sand in your aquarium -- it turns to muck in the bottom and makes a big cloudy mess of the water.

Don't use the Playsand. Sometimes it is treated. Could kill your fish.
