Like the average pet store employee autumnfaerie8 know just enough to be dangerous. In a tank betta are more often the victim of aggression. In tanks 10+ with lots of cover they do well with most community fish. Betta, especially males, aren't very good swimmers. So even if they go after fish in a med-large tank they likely will not get them. Most fish labeled semi-aggressive are a danger to the betta as his long flowy fins make him a target of aggression. Barbs, and larger breed tertas are really bad as they tend to be hit and run fin nippers. Slow moving fish, or ones with showy betta like fins are general the only ones at risk from a betta. Male fancy guppy are the classic betta victim.

Also do to their poor swimming abilities they don't do well in heavy current. Things like power heads can be lethal.

Note that betta are territorial, and small tank like 5 gallons isn't big enouh for them to claim a territory (other than the whole tank), or other fish to hide.

PS- Betta love big tanks with lots of plants, and other hiding places. Gentle current. They like to be able spread their fins a swim. Sure they need access to the surface for air, but only once, or twice a minute at most. I wouldn't use one of those tall hex tanks, but I've seen hem in 80 gallon standard shaped tanks.

PPS- Like most fish a betta will eat anything he can fit in his muth.
