if your tank big enough, put some decoration there, for others fishes to hide and also for male beta to explore .. male beta will act like adventurer, curious in all things and yet its so fun to see..
Bettas should be kept only with other betta fish.
It really isn't about agression although you will see it. The real reason for keeping bettas out of community tanks is because they live in water that has a MUCH HIGHER WATER TEMPATURE. If you put a betta in a standard tropical tank the water temp will be about 76 - 78 deg F. This is much too cold for bettas at that temp they will most likely be very inactive. An inactive fish with long yummy fins is well. a tasty treat for an agressive tropical fish. If you have a tank that is more at the tempature that they like and you have tropical fish with them they will eat anything they can fit in their mouth.
Bettas like water temps in the mid 80's and tropical tanks should be kept around the mid 70's. In fish, a roughly 10 deg change in water tempature from a fish's optimal temp will result in a roughly 50% change in metabolism of the fish. So if a fish is used to 86 deg and you keep it in a 76 deg tank the fish will have a 50% decrease in metabolism, and the opiset is true with the reverse.
That is why bettas do so well in small bowls placed near a window.
In the wild (wild bettas are different than the tank raised ones) bettas live in rice patties that are 8 inches deep and they claim a 3 square foot area. Male bettas are urged to fight mostly by their face colors. Certain color combos fight, others don't. That is why some males ignore eachother when placed next to eachother.
Yes I believe. I had a beta living with two neons and a few small goldfish and they all lived quite happily. Just some betas may be slightly angry so dont put them in first
