Is my Betta a male or a female

Is my Betta a male or a female2007-11-24 23:11:42

Sounds like a stupid question, but I bought a Betta today and when I saw it in the shop I immediately thought it was a male because of its bright red and blue colouring and long(ish) fins. However, the shop owner said it was just a colourful female. Does anyone know? Also, he/she keeps flaring out his/her gill area - What does this mean? Thanks very much!

Answers:

If it turns up its gills when flaring, it's probably a male.

Most pet store owners or salespeople don't really know what they're talking about. It's sad, but true.

Can you give us a link for the picture? New breeding has given both genders longer fins and more colour. If the fins hang and are very long ex. trailing underneath the fish it is a male. If the fins are more rounded and do not hang it is most likely a female.

The gill flaring is natural both males and females do it to show how tough they are.

Add a link with a pic and I'll be able to tell for sure.

females are very small, and do not have a lot of fins. males are very big and colorful, and the fins are giant.
Sounds like a male to me. Females always have smaller fins and duller colors than males.
sounds like a male But what difference does it make anyway unless breeding and they are egg layers and build bubble nests not an easy task to reproduce them
If the pet owner can't tell a male from a female...then he is an idiot
