Answers:Its difficult to tell from that angle but he looks solid not obese. Generally bettas shouldn't be fed all that much but not so little they starve either. Usually fish are very good about knowing how much to eat and they will shun food until they are hungry again.
Too bad we don't learn something from them eh?
I should add that (I have the printed article somewhere in boxes of fish books ugh) you can help your betta stay in TOP condition and live up to 25% longer. with a simple mirror!
For about five minutes a day take a mirror and put it against the bowl. The betta is so aggressive/territorial he will IMMEDIATELY freak out - flare his fins, struggle to kill or chase away the "other" betta (hence the name fighting fish).
Long story short, this is a VERY intense workout for him! Please don't forget and leave the mirror there long or he will go through serious stress for prolonged periods.
If you really want him to live a while, put a female betta in a bowl touching his. He will make a bubble nest, flare out his fins to attract her etc.
This will keep him in top condition - but conversely he'll probably want to eat more due to burning so much energy.
Good luck with your betta.
Well this fish is not obese because fish have diffrent speices and every fish has a diffrent body.
He looks pretty good, based on the picture. If he has been floating on his side and looks a little bloated, he might have a problem with his swim bladder. Not a big deal, just don't feed him for a day or 2. Bettas get backed up (i.e. "constipated") if they eat too much.
