Is table salt ok to use for fish IF is doesnt have iodine in it2007-11-24 23:37:30

I am really desperate for salt to help some of my baby guppy fry who are dying from a parasite, i think. I dont have any aquarium salt, so is it ok to use table salt if it doesnt have any iodine in it? i know that iodine is dangerous for fish. But the ingrediants in the salt that we have at my house are salt and something called Yellow Prussiate of Soda. Do you know what this ingrediant is, and is it safe to use for my fish? or should i play it safe and go out and buy regular aquarium salt? this could be my only chance seeing as how my fry will probably die within the next 24 hours anyway.

Table salt is NEVER safe to use for fish, unless you're cooking them. The aquarium salt has certain nutrients and such in it that the fish need, and table salt can't provide them. Table salt is basically always dangerous to fish. It's best to go out and get aquarium salt from the local pet store.

Yes iodine free table salt is fine! But i would add some Stress coat or something like that also.

You can use it, but what you should get yourself some of is Dr. Fishwell's Evaporated Sea Salt.

buy salt from the LFS you know that it's the right thing to do.

the LFS should also have stuff to kill parasites as well.

Table salt is just salt. No harm there. Though sea salt will also have many extra nutrients and such that will be good for your fish (and you, for that matter!). You can find that at a health food store.

I second the advice for some stress coat.

no Yellow Prussiate of Soda dissolves into Prussic acid in water. Any salt without YPS can be considered safe. Get any table salt without YPS. Aquarium salt are way overpriced IMO.

I would not use it. Aquarium salt is not that expensive so why take a chance?
