Is there a lock to put on your fish tank or aquarium to keep kids from reaching in If so where can I2007-11-24 23:37:33

I have a 6 year old and a 4 year old and we recentlly purchased a 20 gallon freshwater tank. I am wondering if there is something that locks the fish tank so the children won't be able to reach in.

Ask at the pet store if they have a slide-on lid, with most of the lid made of a screen, with rigid plastic edges, which specifically fits a track on the top of the tank. I have a set-up like that for my snake, and while it's not hard for an adult or older kid to work, it slides on and then snaps into place in a track with clips so that the animal for sure can't get out on its own (not a big problem, with fish), and little kids can't get in.

What you are looking for is called a leather belt. You apply it generously to the butt of the child who doesn't listen and continues to stick his hand in the fish tank. This same leather belt also is handy to deter other types of unwanted behavior.

build a cage around the fish tank so the kids can't get near it, keeping the tank closed is the least of your worries, if they bump the tank they could crack it - having fish and having fish is a dangerous combination.
