In a month I've gotten mine to jump to touch my finger. He also makes faces at me now when I feed him. It's rather cute.
It is possible to train them. I have a friend who is a beta breeder. Food is the key. They do get used to schedules. My little guy knows it's feeding time when my alarm goes off in the morning. He's always at the front of the bowl waiting for his food.

Yeah, they are good jumpers. One night while I was sleeping my betta decided to jump right out of his bowl. The next morning I found him all dried up like a fish stick on the floor. It was really sad. Accidental suicide I guess.
