Is there room for more2007-11-24 23:37:50

I have a 55 gal tank with 6 giant danios, 6 bleeding heart tetras, 5 tiger barbs, 6 joli corys, and 2 chinese algae eaters. I'm thinking of adding 6 more tetras, either lemon or head & taillight tetras. Do you think this is doable, or am I pushing the limits?

Answers:

umm. i wouldn't. it sounds too risky.

just get two or three tanks and have them in the same room with all the animals in them. or you could put just a few of each kind in each tank. =]

just make sure beforehand that the animals won't eat each other! =]

good luck!

I would say that if your tank and fish are functioning well now, don't push the limits. Just leave it as is. If you really want those extra fish, then get another tank.
I think your pushing it
No more room. dont add more.
You already have over 70 inches of fish in your aquarium (I assume you meant julii cories), so for a beginner I'd say you were already overstocked. Some advanced aquarists can make it work with an overstocked aquarium, but thats something you have to figure out on your own and it doesn't always work. But, I definately wouldn't add any more fish to the mix and I'd keep an eye on your ammonia and nitrates for a while to make sure they don't spike with the bioload.
Sounds like you might be pushing it. Good rule of thumb to go by is 1 gallon of water per 1 inch of fish leaving out 3-5 gallons for gravel, filter, plants, etc. Plus considering that they will be growing bigger.
It sounds like you already have too much in there right now. I would wait until like 5 of your fish die then get them.
general rule - one inch of fish per gallon ( thats with the maximum size of the fish)
it's tempting to add more fish and make things pretty but think of the fish!

you actually keep chinese algae eaters? those guys are mean. And they don't actually eat that much algae.
