Is there such a thing as too much light2007-11-24 23:11:45

Like if a tank gets 6 watts per gallon? When do plants say enough is enough, ex 8-9 watts per gallon? I know it depends on the plant specie, but is 8-9 watts per gallon an overkill?

Answers:

Wattage per gallon is not relevant as brightness to depth is.

The deeper the tank the brighter light you need to reach the bottom. A 12" deep tank will need light that is one third as bright as a 24" deep tank. This is because the water filters out the more light as it get deeper leaving only the blue end of the spectrum.

I used florescent tubes for tanks up to 18" deep and spot lamps like halides for tanks deeper.

Concentrated bright light will go deeper so keeping the plants green.

The photo period need to resemble the best conditions for the plants and 12 hours per day is usually the best for fish and plants. Longer will only encourage algae to grow and smother the plants.

algae can grow in the water if you have too much light on it.
yes, fish need darkness & sleep because they have no eyelids, imagine just llooking at light the whole time, you'd go blind
It can boost one of your chemicals; I'm not sure which one but you should have about 14 hours of light and 10 hours of dark give or take...
Oh Yeah, it could be a really bad thing. First of all you can have a lot of algae build up and your coral (if have any ) and fish can over heat and die. Good luck~!~!~!
