Is this okay for a fish (betta)
Im setting up a tank and I'm going to get a betta soon. I dont want real plants, but I hate the way all the plastic plants at the pet stores look. They look way too fake and plasticy. I went to the craft store and got some fabric flowers, and am making fish tank decorations with those. Is that okay to put in the tank? (after I rinse them well that is). I dont see why it wouldnt be okay, but I dont want to take any chances that it could be harmful to my fish.
Answers:Well, speaking from experience, I've been doing that for years and it's never been a problem. I wanted a "classy" looking tank so I went and bought some beautiful fabric flowers, and made my own, just using the bottom parts of some of my old fish tank plants. (the plastic part that you bury under the gravel). What I did, was fill a bowl with water and place the flowers in them for a few days. None of the color leaked out so I decided it was safe and put them in my tank. I would replace them with new fabric flowers when they'd start to fray, and I had the same fish for over 6 years, the fabric flowers didnt harm them one bit.
I do suggest using light/pastel flowers if you're going to do it. I recently bought some dark red flowers to replace the ones I had. I went to rinse them off and my sink filled with red dye almost instantly. Needless to say I didnt use them. pastel flowers use less dye and Ive never had a problem with the color leaking.
bad idea. the fabric will wear out after bein submerged in water for awhile and little tiny bits will tear off and float around yer tank, your betta will probley think its food and eat it and dead fish aren't that fun.
I wouldn't put fabric ones in ..they have dyes that can come out in the water which is why fish plants are plastic.Bettas are very finiky fish and you could very well kill it with fabric plants.
I would be wary of adding anything to a fish tank that wasn't made for a fish tank. You don't know what was used to dye the colour on the flowers, which may leech into the water. Also if it has any plastic bits on it, Betta's have very delicate tails, and these can get caught and torn on ornaments really easily.
