If you get any kind of pet, fish or anything else, you should be able to adequately take care of it. I've always thought that pet stores and animal shelters should give an exam on how to care for that particular pet. If you don't pass, you don't get the pet. That poor fish your friend had was obviously in distress. Good thing she gave it to someone who cares as much as you do!

I have a betta I've had it now for nearly 7 months. I generally every 2-4 days dash his food in his water. He has lived off the food this long and growing. my parents had a betta they kept for nearly as long that lived in disstilled water.

I had a carnie fish (one I won at the local carnival). After awhile I discovered I could not take care of him the way that he should be. So I gave him to my cousins (who wanted a pet). They love him and take very good care of him now. I think if you can not take care of a pet you should try and find a good home for them. This goes for any pet, even a fish. Fish are Friends! (not food!)

I've seen kids at a carnival play the games to get fish in bags as prizes. They would take great joy in torturing the poor things as much as possible, including stamping, squeezing, poking, and throwing them at any opportunity.
