I've had my current fish for the past seven years and he's like a friend to me. It's tragic how a life can be seen as "disposeable" as long as it is small enough to put in a ziplock bag.

i understand you,i start yelling at people at pet shops for the way the treat thier fish,i have a LOT of bettas and i love them all.they come to the glass to greet me(even though its probably for food)i have rescued alot of fish.i wish i could do the same things people do to fish to the people.

Well, I agree that they overfed the fish and that's what made the water murky, but betta fish are supposed to be in either distilled or dechlorinated water so don't freak out about that part. I hate it when people think that fish have no feelings and therefore don't care, so they just let the water go like that. There's a myth that bettas like to be in murky water but honestly, I don't believe it. The murkier the water, the less oxygen is dissolved in it for the fish to breathe. At least a third of the water should have been changed once a week. I have had many fish and all of them have lived for quite a long time, fishwise. Right now I just have one betta, and when I got her, the container actually had the instructions right there on it. Many people think that they don't need to read the instructions and that if they feed the fish more, it will grow bigger. I hate people like that. Take care of your fish, and it will live a longer and happier life than it would have had with your friend.

I went into a local decorating store the other day. It is a large chain. They had a fish bowl in one of the displays. If I had to guess it was probably 1 gallon maybe 2. It was divided in half so it was book ends. Cute right? Yah- they had 4 goldfish in there.

I went to one of the clerks and told her that I knew I sounded crazy BUT- that was completely inappropriate. The only fish that should be kept like that was MAYBE a betta. But living creatures are not decorations- they should not be displayed as such. Throw some silk flowers in them.

She definitely thought I was crazy. I should go check on them.
