Ive had a goldfish for 8 years2007-11-24 23:11:48

is this a good age? he is about 25cm long pout to tail and starting to go silver at the scales

Answers:

Yes 8 years is a good age! You must be doing something right!! Most of the ones in my ponds are twelve/thirteen,rather fat and quite big.Altogether I have 60+ fish.....

its not normal but its fine...
Goldfish can live 20-40 years. Many people kill them as babies so it is unusual to let them live til 8. However, you should be able to enjoy your fish for many years to come with good care:) good job so far!
Aw, that's sweet. My last oranda, Bruno lived till he was 7 but he got a bad swim-bladder problem and although we tried and tried to make him better he was really stressed out and gasping so I took him to the vets to be put-to-sleep. He was healthy as a horse, with an appetite to match the week before, all bright orange scales and a beautiful strong swishy tail.

Keep up the good work! I also read that they can live to around 20 years if kept in perfect conditions. That is very difficult to do in captivity, but you seem to be doing great so far!

i have heard of Gold fish living to 20 + years if look after properly

so he is still a youngster, as to going silver one of mine has done this he is completely silver now its perfectly normal..

Japanese bearded goldfish can live into their seventies.
