Ive just changed the water in my guppys 2 1/2 galon tank, (no filter) water changes twice a week2007-11-24 23:37:56

And no heater. Kept in daughters bedroom on her dresser. So I wasn't to concerned about if it was to cold. But I changed the water yesterday and this morning the water is clowdy already. They arn't fed much, I was wondering if it could be the water conditioner. Ive only used it per direction. What else could this be. Clowdy isn't very nice looking and Im not sure if its doing harm to the fish. Thanks

What is happening is that the water is maturing. Waste matter from the fish and the excess food produce ammonia which show up as a cloudyness in the water. This should dissapear after 7 to 10 days when the nitrifying bacteria have comsumed the ammonia.

Then you should do partial water changes every week. the process can be speeded up by introducing live bacteria in the form of a liquid available from any good aquatic store.

A filter should also be added to remove as much debris as possible.

Your water is getting cloudy because the water is not circulating, if you clean it twice a week you are taking all the good stuff out specially if you are changing the water 100%, it is recomended to only change 10% of the water. The conditioner usually makes the water cloudy for about a week, this is why a 10 gallon tank is the best way to go. anything under 10 gallons is not recomended. But you should have a heater and filters, guppys need to have the water temperature around 71 degrees. Hope this helps!

I agree, get a filter. It will keep the tank cleaner and you wont have to clean it as much. Since the tank is so small only doing a 10% water change is pointless, it will get dirty again before the day is even over. When I kept my betta in a 2.5 I would clean the whole thing out too, smaller tanks are hard to cycle anyway. Just make sure you never have ammonia in the tank, which you clean it often enough. If you get a filter once a week cleaning would be fine.

every time u change the water like that is changed the pH and all.. to tell u the truth the 2 1/2 gal tanks suck.. if u want your tank to be clear u need to keep all the leaves of the water right .. and that means u need a filter.. they have small ounces for them pl ex one in petco well i know they use to b/c i was working in fish..every time u set up a new tank it has to set it self that is way when u set up a new tank u are told to Waite 1 week before u add fish.. how are your fish looking loss of color?slow,not eating, all of this will be b/c of changing the water so much,

try getting a water clarifier from your local pet store. if you are doing water changes twice a week for guppys, there should be no problem. how many guppies do you have?

try the waterclarifier, which can be got about anywhere.
