Jack Dempsey growth and feeding
I have a Jack Dempsey cichlid that I got in March. He's probably close to 4 inches. He eats a LOT. How much should I be feeding him daily, teaspoonwise? And what temperature should the water be at?
Also, since I got him a big tank, he's been a lot less active. He keeps hiding out behind a fake tree. Also, the back part of his body is looking a yellowish color, not like sick, just yellow. What does this mean?
Answers:Jack Dempsey Cichlids can grow up to ten inches, they prefer a temperature at about 72掳-82掳F they eat Cichlid Floating Pellets and occasionally can be fed live feeder fish.
The yellow coloring, well, there's several possibilities that can cause this. The first, and probably more common is genetics. Meaning they're born with it. I don't think this is the problem in your case though, I'm guessing the fish would've been this way when you bought it.
Next, could be an injury. Is it the lone fish in the tank? My next guess would be vitamin deficiency. Fish need to be fed a variety of foods to get all their vitamins. Usually rotating the feedings during the week of flakes or pellet food, frozen or freeze dried bloodworms, spirulina flakes, frozen or freeze dried brine shrimp, etc. All fish would benefit from a variety in their diet. So you could try that and see if it helps.
Feed him as much as he can eat in 3 minutes (takes time for him to chew his food). The water can be 25 celcius
