Just wondering Why:2007-11-24 23:38:00

Why don't fish in fish stores and at home reproduce? I mean, it isn't possible that they separate the genders. Can someone explain?

Answers:

They do reproduce. Put a male guppy with a couple of females and you'll have tons of fry before you know it. All livebearers reproduce fairly rapidly (mollies, guppies, swordtails). Many fry get eaten by larger fish if not removed to their own tank. Other fish lay eggs and if conditions are not right, they will not lay the eggs.

It all depends on the fish and the environment of the aquarium. If the aquarium is not set up properly the fish will not mate.

I have heard of people who bought one fish and ended up with more than one, but I've never whitnessed it myself.

My best guess, if they do not, in fact, reproduce, would be that the conditions inside an aquarium are not favorable enough to support the development of the roe (fish eggs).

It is most likely the environment of the tank. Some fish are very hard to breed. It all depends on the type of fish too. Like if you have a guppy you will have babies in no time! Some fish need certain conditions to be met before they will breed.
