Koi & Carp: Whats the difference
Koi, or Nishikigoi, are the national fish of Japan. "Nishiki" describes a colorful fish in Japanese, and "Goiro Koi" means carp, so Nishikigoi can be translated as "colorful carp."
A
Koi are a type of carp. Goldfish are a type of carp too.
Koi is the Japanese term for carp..smiling. But let's call them Koi.so much more dramatic!
About $5,000 per fish.
Koi are colourful varieties of carp developed from the asian common carp. The japanese used to keep this dull coloured carp in ponds for food but when odd ones showed bright colours they thought they were special and so didn't eat them. They bred only the coloured ones together over 200 years to produce the koi we now know today.
Carp is a group of fish that includes many species. Koi and common carp are the same species (cyprinus carpio) but they can appear in many forms around the world through selective breeding. Koi are genetic freaks or mutations of the ordinary carp the Japanese call magoi.
The only real differences are the colours but because koi have been inbred for their colours and not for their meat they tend to be slimmer and have a less pronounced hump than the common carp.
they are from the same family, but koi have been not only breed to be more colorful, they also have different scale patterns,
both have front barbels, but koi are more slimer/longer than a carp would be, carps are higher in height and more buckly.
