Marineland penguin emperor brand filter2007-11-24 23:38:56

I saw the new mold on the emperor penguin (the one with the bio wheel) and noticed that the new ones might prevent all the splashing dripping sounds that the old model did

So i was wondering does anyone own the newer versions? do you still hear the splashing sounds even when the tank is pretty well filled? thinking bout switching out of my aquaclear since the penguin does a much better job at keeping it sparkling clean

Um.. which one? The Emperor is a separate brand from the Penguin line :-P

The Emperor line tends to be the higher end, more expensive type than the Penguins.

I've had my Penguin filters for six months now, and as long as I properly fill my tank (and keep it properly filled), I don't hear any splashing whatsoever. I kinda miss it a bit. The only downside is you will occasionally have to pull the filter up a bit otherwise the water doesn't flow through properly, and the wheel will stop spinning.

I think i have the new one. I got it bout a month ago. When your water is filled up really high you can't hear a thing! But if its lower from evaporation, it sounds like a mini waterfall. I kinda like the sound.
The new Emperor is supposed to be a little quieter, but if you have one of the Penguin "B" models, it's probably not much of a difference (Penguins all have big covers over the wheel now). If you have an old Penguin, the Emperor will definitely be an improvement. If you have a newer Penguin, I doubt you'll notice much difference.

Aqua-Clear and Penguins are both good filters. What makes you think a Bio-Wheel does a much better job than an Aqua-Clear? The Aqua-Clear has customizable media and is probably technically a better filter. A lot of the appeal of Bio-Wheels is the cool wheel. On the new Emperors, you can't even see the wheel. Aqua-Clears are quiet to begin with and have adjustable flow to make them even quieter.

I mean, I have a Penguin 200B because I actually like the faint trickling sound.

You should probably just get a small cannister filter. That will be much cleaner and much quieter than any hang-on-back filter ever will. You can get the Rena XP1 cannister for $62 at PetSmart (they'll pricematch their website).
