"Hi,

My 2 year old Betta Fish's fins are curling all of a sudden at

the edges, with tiny little lumps at the base of his tail.

Otherwise he is eating and active as of this morning. What

does it sound like, and how can I treat it, please? I'm very

worried.

What you are talking about in the betta world is often referred to, appropriately enough, "curling". It usually occurs when a betta has been exposed to ammonia or other toxins that accumulate. Curling, blackened or bloodied fin tips are frequently the first stages of fin rot. The tiny lumps on the fin tips are usually droplets of blood collecting just under the surface of the fragile tissue. In a white betta or light colored betta you would see the red or black color but in a darker blue or red betta they may just appear as teeny lumps.

Minor fin rot doesn't require medication. Just increase the frequency you do your water changes and test your water parameters to make sure he isn't being exposed to any ammonia or nitrites. Observe him closely over the coming days / weeks to make sure he doesn't loose any fin tissue that would indicate a more serious infection taking hold.

Bettas can live around 7 years if kept properly, it sounds like parasite to me it could also be fin rot its hard to say without seeing the fish but there is a medecine that will cover most of the stuff its called MelaFix go to any aquarium store and you will find it..hope that helps

Sounds to me like your betta is suffering from fin rot. The biggest causant of fin rot is poor water conditions. Is he in a clean, filtered, heated tank? If he is, are you doing weekly water changes of at least 20%? Is he in a bowl? If so, consider getting him into a bigger tank with a filter and a heater. You should also be doing 25% water changes every two to three days if he's in a bowl.

In the meantime, treat him with aquarium salt (1 tablespoon per five gallons of water). This will ward off any other infection and add electrolytes to help him heal quicker. But you will have to keep an eye on him to make sure he tolerates the salt. Some bettas are sensitive to salt, and will end up going into renal failure. If he does start to show signs of distress, do an immediate 75% water change.

Also, add StressCoat - this great product contains aloe and electrolytes to promote healing and a healthy environment.

These two things, combined with keeping his water clean, will help him heal. It will still take at least 4 weeks for a complete recovery though.
