My Betta Fish

My Betta Fish2007-11-24 23:38:12

When they eat, both of my betta fish put a flake in their mouth, chew it, and spit it out. Is this normal?

Answers:

This is normal. the flakes may be to large. Some time you will see the fish try to eat a flake after it spits it out. The flake will absorb water and become easier for the fish to break it up and swallow it.

Yes. They don't like to eat much & they are very picky.
If the flakes are too big they can't swallow so they spit them out and hope they break up that way. They don't really chew. Try dried blood worms - that is their favorite.
lol i think that is normal. Rip. my sister killed her beta on accedent, put it in too cold water because another fish died in the tank
Yes. It means they don't like the food. Get brine shrimp & bloodworms. That'll pump 'um up! They love bloodworms especially..
Bettas' mouths are not designed to accept flakes readily. Feed him food designed for a betta, which usually comes in a small pellet form.
Yes, the flakes may be too big for them to take with one bite. Blood worms are their favorite, and in my personal experience flakes just dirty the water more quickly anyways because they can't eat all the flakes they just sit there and rot. Try also Betta Bio-gold by Hikari. Mine loves them even better than blood worms.
actully it is not normal i had a one it swallowed its food
Dry food can be hard to eat when you have no tongue or teeth. Try feeding a tiny bit of spirulina fed frozen brine shrimp. Those small bits of uneaten food will quickly pollute the water shortening your fish's lifespan.

Yes its absolutely normal.

They spit it out cos the food may be too hard or too big for them to take in.

You can try crushing the food particles making them really small and then feeding your bettas. Works well with mine.
