My Betta fish Has tail rot and,,,,,2007-11-24 23:38:10

i would like to know what kind of salt to put in to help and how much.. see my problem is my car is at the shop so im kinda stranded here and im afarid my fish has rot.. my friend when i called and discribed it said it was. plz help fast!!

Salt doesn't cure fin rot. Generally fin rot is caused by poor water conditions. Most likely due to lack of weekly bowl/tank cleanings, and/or over feeding. In general most cases of fin rot clear up if you keep the betta in clean water. In cases where this doesn't clean up the fin rot a broad spectrum antibotic is called for. Generally I recommend cleaning the bowl/tank and adding melafix/bettafix.

Salt is not harmful, and may help prevent a number of conditions. 1 teaspoon per 2.5 gallons is generally called for. Table salt works fine.

It needs antibiotic medication. It doesn't cost a lot, but they only sell it at a pet store. I've heard about the salt water treatment. You mmake up some saltwater and put the fish in it for a few seconds then return it to it's regular water. But if you use table salt, it'll probably kill it.

Don't add salt to the tank. With most fish, salt does much more harm than good, and some fish (namely most catfish, tetras, and loaches) don't tolerate salt well even at very small doses. Bettas, being secondary freshwater fishes (fish that evolved from recent saltwater ancestors), are more tolerant of salt than primary freshwater fishes (such as catfish), but Bettas are from soft acidic water in the wild and are not naturally exposed to salt. Salt will not cure tail rot, and it is not good for the fish.
