My Chichlid fish had baby chichlids and are presently in a separate bowl Can they be in with the big2007-11-24 23:39:02

My tank is 55 gals and my adult fish just had babies. I found them swimming on the top of the water (no not dead) so I quickly scooped them up in a net and put them in a bowl. Can they be with the other adult fish, or will they eat them etc.?

Answers:

Like some of the other people have said, Cichlids are really good parents and if you leave the babies in the tank they will likely survive depending on the tank mates. However, if these are community cichlids (i.e. Angelfish or dwarf cichlids) I would vote for separating them in a breeding net which can be purchased at your local pet store because other tank mates may try to eat them. If they are African Cichlids you should make sure there are plenty of rocks and hiding spaces and you can leave the babies in the tank. I have a 120 gal African Cichlid tank with about 5 generations of fish. Lots of rocks for hiding spaces. Other more agressive cichlids (Jack Dempsey, convicts) I don't have experience with breeding those, but may be better to sepearate those as well. Good luck with your new fish!

no they will eat them
A bowl may not be the best idea, simply because there isn't a bubbler to keep the gases just right in the water.

Most adult fish will eat babies. Check your local pet store for a baby "net" or seperator. They can stay in the same tank with good water and air without the fear of being eaten.

Best of luck!

My mom's cichlids are cannibals. If you want to keep the babies keep the fry seperated until they are bigger. Cichlids are very much like guppies and are breeding machines, so if you want to put them in and they get eaten. you'll soon have more.
You will not be able to keep the water in the bowl clean enough for the fry to thrive and grow. Try using on a breeding trap (some types come with a simple filter) that can be put in your tank and make use of the constant temperature and steady lights.
