My Goldfish Are Constantly opening and closing thier mouths what shall I do2007-11-24 23:38:32

There are 4 fish one is 4 and a half inches, 2 are eight ihches, and One is Six inches, I have a twelve gallon tank and I just bought a New Filter. Is Something wrong with the Fish?

Your tank is overloaded and the fish are being poisoned by the water. Change 25% of the water every four or five days and reduce what you are feeding. That is a huge bio-load for a tank that is that small. Consider adding a bio-wheel to your tank http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/pr. they can really improve the water quality, but it taks a couple of weeks for them to grow the necessary bacteria.

It's most likely water quality. You have way too many goldies in way too little water. and if you are running a totally new filter ammonia and/or nitrIte are probably getting to toxic levels because it takes around a month for a new filter to get up to speed at being able to convert ammoina which is toxic into less toxic nitrAte.

If you have it, put the old filter and filter pad back on the tank along with the new filter.

Do a 50% partial water change and dose with amquel or prime to detox ammonia.
