My Male Betta Wont Build a Bubble Nest

My Male Betta Wont Build a Bubble Nest2007-11-24 23:38:38

I am having troubles breeding my Bettas. I have a male betta that will not build a bubblenest when I introduce him to a female. (I know he is capable, I've seen him do it before) But when the female is ready, showing all signs, all he does is pay attention to her, chasing her and such. Not worrying about building a nest, help?

Answers:

Your male may never build a bubble nest. Bettas (just like people) are very much individuals. You can try putting their tanks next to one another and see if that helps. Then again..I've found that if you seclude your breeding bettas about 2 weeks from other fish.they are more in the mood because they haven't become bored by seeing each other every day. (Kind of like married couples ;P) Anyway.there are a lot of techniques to breeding bettas..and each pair might need something different to make it work.

Then again.like I said in the beginning..he might never breed. I had a male betta that never built a bubble nest and never flared at anyone or anything. He was not breedable at all. I had to adopt him out because I didn't have the room for a "pet" betta.

Even though she's ready, maybe he's not ready. And if he is ready to mate with her, maybe you are introducing her too early and too fast. I would suggest putting their tanks side by side so that they can see each-other, than maybe he will build the nest. Than after he does that, than he will be ready. He may be chasing her around; either because he is willing to mate with her now even though the nest isn't made, or maybe he is trying to chase her away because he isn't ready.
Nikki gave you some good advice, but also, you can't always just put a male and female together and expect them to want to get it on. It's the same thing with people, some bettas are just not compatible.

That's why some breeders say to get two males and two females in case it doesn't work out between a specific pair.. you have four different combinations instead of just one.

Give them some more time. Keep their tanks side-by-side for another week or two and see if the male becomes interested, and then give it a rest.

Generally you should put them within sight of each other. Let him build a nest then put her in.
