My Shubunkin has a swollen red thing on his face2007-11-24 23:39:27

Can someone pleese help! My Shubunkin has an absess on his face or somthing. Its blood red and looks like a little sack on the side of his face. What can I do? Pleese help!!

I agree, it's probably a parisite or bacteria. If you could manage to get a picture of it and take it down to a petstore that sells fish (petco, petsmart, or a fish only store) they may be able to help you figure out exactly what it is, and what would treat it best. At this point, since you don't know what it is, and either type of infection could be contagious, it's probably best to get him away from other fish (if you have any others) into a tank of his own. You might also look for a picture of it online and see if you can get a name to go with the condition since it's rather difficult to offer accurate advice from a description online.

Look and see if you can see anything sticking out of it though. If it's red, swollen (sometimes with a white thing in the middle like a really nasty pimple) and a strand/string sticking out, it's an achorworm and can be removed, and the water treated with melafix (to help heal the wound and keep it from getting infected). Make sure you keep up on your tank care though. Most illnesses are either caused or boosted by dirty water, or bad care. (parisites for example, might be in the water all along, but when the water is dirty, the fish is weaker, and an easier target)

Make sure you're doing 25% water changes at least once a month (and if the tank is less than 30 gallons and has more than two goldfish/shubunkins in it, at least every other week, or even every week.)
