Yes, it's normal. First of all are you feeding them Betta pelletts? If you are, I found out that most Bettas don't like pelletts they prefer Freeze Dried Worms. You can get them at any pet store usually 5$. And only feed your fish a pinch, because the reason why your tank is getting dirty is because it doesn't like what your feeding it and that's building up in the tank and causing it to get very messy. Try buying new fish food. Also, having more than one Betta fish in one bowl could be the problem too. If the are in separate bowls, keep them so far apart they can't see each other. if that doesn't help then i suggest going to the pet store. Good luck!

Yes. Beta fish live in rice paddies, and other dirty water ways, like swamps. Beta usually eat by pulling in the food, and spitting it out a few times to make sure it is good. when thy pull in the food, they eat a little and spit the rest out.
