If your betta has long flowing fins, its a male. The female doesn't have this. Its not technically just about the color, but the female Betta doesn't have "pretty" fins. It looks like a Betta w/out the flowing fins. It is usually really pale in color, compared to a male Betta. Its not whether its red or blue though. My guess is that you have a male. Most people are not interested in the ugly female.

Color doesn't have anything to do with it, all the females I had were very colorful. Even though there are many different tail types males will have the longer fins and females have the shorter fins. Also most petstores sell the males in those tiny little cups and keep the females in tanks.
