Since fish have no eyelids, their eyes will stay open while they are asleep. So there's pretty much no way to tell except that they won't move around nearly as much as usual, and won't eat anything.

fish sleep on and off all day, for just minutes at a time. they don't have a set day like humans do and they also don't need near as much sleep.
