My female beta fish is puffy in her chest Is she pregnant How long are betas pregnant for2007-11-24 23:39:07

Could something else be wrong with her?

fighters are not live breeders, if you see her chest is looking puffy its because she is developed now and thats were the eggs are, chances are if you get a male they will breed.she might also get stripes on her side.

Could be.might take her to the vet. Beta fish are pregnant until they deliver. I hope you have Blue Cross because multiple births are not uncommon.

It could be bloat, an illness, if she acts ill then add a small amount of marine salt (small pinch to one gallon water) and see if that helps.

Bettas lay eggs,and if she's going to do that, she will start blowing bubbles at the top of the water. If the eggs are fertilized by a male, the babies are the size of a period dot and very succeptible to drafts/fungus/bacteria. Cover the tank loosely so air gets in but there is no draft and don't change the water. I've raised the babies before and it's not easy but can be done. .I suggest getting a book on betta breeding and go to aquarium shows (ask pet shops how to contact your local aquarium societies)..they put on shows and breeders are always happy to share their tips on raising/breeding fish.

She's not pregnant. Unless your fish is a livebearer (and bettas are not), they don't get pregnant. They get ovigerous. That means they're full of eggs. She could be ovigerous or just fat if she's overfed.

Shes most likely puffy in her chest because she is now sexually mature enough to breed. Those are just all the eggs in her, but won't ge fertizlized without a male. Female bettas drop their eggs which get fertilzed by the male, and he puts them into his bubble nest.
