My fish have ick and I have bought medication Is there anything else that I need to do to the tank
50 gallons and its fresh water not salt. Any suggestions?
Answers:Keep in mind the only fish that get ich are stressed fish so improving conditions in your tank well help hault the progress of the parasite.
I. Increase the temperature of the aquarium to about 80-85 F. This will speed up the life cycle of parasite so that it'll become more valunerable to medicine.
II. Treat the aquarium with aquarium/conditioning salts. The salts will improve the immune system of the fish and prevent emerging ich parasites from digging into the fish's body. If the parasites cannot find a host to dig into then they'll die from starvation. If you want to you can use ich medicine that doesn't contain malachite green but this is optional.
III. Begin gravel vacuuming and remove 25% of the tank's water daily. This will suck up free-swimming parasites and also their eggs that have been deposited in the gravel.
IV. Do this for about two weeks. It takes ich, in warmer temperatures, seven days to complete their lifecycle. The second week will be used to pick up any other parasites that might have been left behind.
i think you did fine but i dont know if theres anything else you can do :(
if you got the medicine then follow the direction you will need to do a part water change, the directions will tell you how much and how often and you should be fine.
its also a good idea to leave a light on the tank over night for a couple of day cause ick parasites ar drawn out by the light its more affective that way other than that after 7 days do a partial water change if ick still remains repeat treatment
that's all i know of oh don't panic it will clear up eventually
Take the carbon out of your filters.Carbon pulls medications out of the water, leaving them useless. Adding some aquarium salt may be beneficial too. You can follow the directions on the carton. HTH
Raise the temperature of the tank because this will aid in healing for the fish and also killing of the parasites. Do up to 50% water changes until the problem is corrected and then go back to doing 20% water changes.
