My fish is acting funny
My fish is acting really weird. I have 3 goldfish. They all are in a tank that is about 25 gallons. We think that one is a male and the other two females. Well, anyway, yesturday and today the white one who we think is a male was swimming along side the tank. He did this all day yesturday and he's been doing it today. He'll come up to eat then he startes up again. Does anyone have a clue to what he's doing? But the weird part is that he's not the only one acting weird. The other two who we think are females have been by the bottom of the tank all day today and yesturday. They wouldn't come up to eat or anything. One of them moved today but went straight back to where it was. The other one hasn't moved at all. Someone please tell me what's going on! (Also I don't know if this has anything to do with it but the one who we think is a male was biting one of the females a couple of days ago!) I'll take any suggestions at this point. PLZ help if you can!
Answers:This may sound random.. but do you have your fish in an air conditioned room? Its really hot where I am so in my bed room I have 2 betta fish (in separate tanks.. obviously) and when my room temperature is about 66' or 64' degrees in my room my fish start acting REALLY REALLY weird!! If its either too hot or too cold in your room, (sometimes even if you have a water heater to keep your tank the right temp sometimes it changes.. so you should check it regularly). But if your fish tank is too hot or too cold, your fish could be uncomfortable.. so they could be trying to get comfortable!! HOPE THIS HELPS!
probably a mating dance. lol
because boys are MEAN! and the girls are lesbians and dont want anything to do with the boy fish so they try to avoid him by staying at the bottom of the tank. sounds like a good movie.
They may actually be preparing for mating. Many breeds of fish "fight" before they start breeding. Do a 25% water change, just in case its a problem with your water quality. If they don't get better, go to your local fish store and talk to someone about buying some medicine. Check the fish out to make sure that they don't have cloudy eyes, bulging scales, white spots, or torn fins. Describe the problems to the person at the fish store (try for a locally owned store, not a chain) and they should be able to recommend a medicine for you.
How new are these fish to the tank? They could be feeling very uncertain about their surroundings. Additionally, I would do a 25% water change and either perform a series of water tests on the tank or take a sample to your local pet store and let them test the water to make sure the pH, nitrates, ammonia, etc are all within acceptable levels. Also, do you have a heater set up to the tank and what is the water temperature?
Different goldfish have different personalities. Some are active and some are not. That is probably what it is.
uhhhhhh.i think thats the male is"flirting" witht the females in a way.or they are not used to there surrondings..i place at a time
You are overstocked. Anytime a fish acts abnormally means there is something wrong with the water, its either high ammonia since goldfish are dirty, or high nitrites, or high nitrates.
Baby/juvenile fancy goldfish need 10 gallons PER fish and baby/juvenile long bodied goldfish need 20 gallons PER fish. An adult will need atleast 50-60 gallons PER fish. Goldfish have lifespans of 30 years an grow to be 12-14 inches in length.
