My friend is offering me a catfish for the tank I am getting in less than a week but please help2007-11-24 23:38:28

It is a wild cat fish, and he says I could have it. The problem is, I wouldn't be able to put other fish in there because the catfish may still have diseases. I'm just wondering what you would do. Would you take the cat fish or get regular fish like barbs and mollies instead? What do you think? I'm stumped on it. I LOVE that cat fish, but I do want colorful, healthy tropicals. What do you think?

I would not get the catfish, for all the reasons, but mostly size. Depending on species, they can get BIG! And it would probably have to be the only fish in the tank, as they do have big mouths and would eat other fish.

However, if you had enough space and didn't want any other fish, then you could have it.

If you live in the USA, that wild catfish could be carrying parasites. and it will eventually grow big enough to make a midnight snack of the other fish. Also, it'll be a cool water fish, which wouldn't be good for your tropicals. Forget the wild catfish.

If I were you I'd just get some tropical fish, like maybe guppies. Wild catfish can get huge!

Wild catfish as fine if you want to keep it, but know you鈥檙e going to need a very big tank and you will need to keep it alone or it鈥檚 going to kick every single fishes fins, that you pair up with it.

I have had wild catfish in with Oscars, and it was a mess鈥?they sparred almost daily, the Oscar would attack and the catfish would then latch on to the side of the Oscar and suck its scales off. Big no no, LOL

One of the biggest thing folks need to know about catfish is that they get aggressive, simply because they have electronic sensor(those little whiskers) and it sends off vibes through the water and so, if you don鈥檛鈥?have it in a big tank, that sounds bounces right back to them and drives the poor things bonkers. So if I where you, please leave it. Don鈥檛 put it through any torture; it just wouldn鈥檛 be fair to the guy.
