My goldfish is sitting at the bottom of the tank & zooms to the surface like hes trying to breath Wh2007-11-24 23:39:14

I have a large comet goldfish (Jerry) that is 9 years old. He's been sitting at the bottom of the tank a lot lately and occasionally zooms to the surface, sometimes hitting the hood, like he's taking a breath. I have a 30 gallon tank with an airstone and a filter. He seems to be eating well and looks okay. But this sitting at the bottom has me worried. Is he dying? Does he have a swimbladder problem? I've been feeding him Tetrafin goldfish flakes but just started giving him peas after reading on the internet that he might be constipated. I have other fish in the tank (another 9 year old comet, named Ben) and two smaller goldfish seem to be fine.

Can anyone help me?

maybe like air, when a fish is dying it will sit somewhere for along time until you have to nudge it to move that is what happened to my Bambino my little fighting fish god rest his little soul

Maybe he has gas. Peas do that to me. If you changed his diet and his behaviour changed, you should be able to figure it out. Maybe 9 years in the tank was just too much and he is trying to escape.

maybe he's ready to go now?

have you changed water recently? did he do this before the water change?
