He was attacked by the sucker fish that I had in the tank. The sucker fish nipped his fins and took off a lot of his scales. I took the sucker fish out.

Answers:

First of all you mixed two types of fish that had totally different environmental requirements. One is a tropical fish (pleco, it comes from South America) and one that is from a milder temperate climate (goldfish lives in colder regions). It is difficult to set a temperature range that will work for both types of fish.

Having said that goldfish have a high slime factor. Plecos once they get adequate in size will suck on them as their diet change from being an herbavor to a omnivor. Your goldfish if the environment is clean should recover, but if your water has a high bacteria or fungal count the goldfish under stress can pick up an infection. Just keep an eye on the goldfish for the next few days to make sure there is no growths where the goldfish has been attacked. If you have access to aquarisol i'd use that as a preventative measure.

if your plecho was sucking at another fish it either had something dirty on it and was trying to help or rour tank way be too clean, do you have gravel in it ?if not go to petsmart or something. it was probably just hungry. if you dont have a pet store try awal mart . as foryour fish it probably wont make it ,but try a very very small amount of shock treatment.

Your sucker fish proably didn't do it to be mean. They are not usually agressive. I wouldn't hold it against him.
