My guppy seems unable to swim, what is wrong2007-11-24 23:39:20

One of my guppies was on the bottom of the tank this morning, very much alive, but seemingly unable to swim. I came home on my lunch break and he is still on the bottom and keeps thrusting in to the water, only to sink again.

he doesn't seem bloated at all and his fins don't appear damaged (although it's hard to tell with him sitting on the bottom)

He is about a year old, so it may be he is just old, but i've never seen this before, and he is very energetic and healthy looking, only he can't swim.

Answers:

How many other Guppies are in the tank with him, and how big is the tank?

Have you checked your water parameters lately to make sure there isn't anything with the Ammonia or Nitrites being off? (even 0.50 of either could be harmful if not fatal).

What kinds of Guppy is he? Feeder? Fancy? How big?

it sounds like the air bladder got damaged and if that is the case he wont last very much longer

thats really weird does he eat at all? maybe its just that he is sleeping or is going through a depressing time or one of his fins COULD be damaged maybe u should take him to the vet

he might be sick ask in the store where you buy them. a healthy fish must swim. smaller the fish shorter the life.

he is probably going to die of old age. Unfortunately, since you bought him, you don't know how old he is. And small fish only live a few years at most. such is the circle of life.
