My porcupine puffer is ailing and Im kinda up the creek cause Im without a water testing kit at the2007-11-24 23:39:25

Last night I did some maintence on my 70 gallon saltwater tank. I replaced a few gallons of water that had evaporated and took out a few extra gallons. I used my regular water conditioner (Amquel, plus some Aqua Nova). I use Oceanic salt mixture and after finishing up my hydrometer read in the "safe" zone. Everything looked fine this morning, then when I got home from class this afternoon, my fish were all hanging around at the bottom. My smaller clownfish and damsels and clownfish seemed a little off, but my small/medium picasso trigger was upside down in an artificial coral gasping. My fairly large porcupine puffer was pale,lying at the bottom, and gasping. At first I thought the water level was not allowing enough oxygen to the surface, so I adjusted the outflow stream from the large canister filter so there was more agitation at the surface. Then I added more amquel and a large airstone. Everyone else seems to have recovered, but my puffer is still lathargic, won't eat. Any tips?

Check your salinity again and rinse your hydrometer out really good first you could have got a bad reading or your hydrometer could be off try taking a water sample to your local fish store to be tested. Good luck!

What's the temperature in the tank. When the temperature rises in our tank our fish get lethargic. Warmer temperatures could also cause a bacterial bloom. It's very hard to say exactly what it could be. Maybe try another emergency water change. For a tank that size, something like a 20 gallon change might be recommended. We have a 44 pentagon and do a 10 gallon once a week. I hope that helps at all.
