Need info on Male betta fish2007-11-24 23:38:51

Ok so I got this male betta fish about 3 months ago. He swims around his bowl and looks pretty lonely. I go to the pet shop to get him a female and I ask the pet store lady will it be ok for me to get a female for my male betta fish. She said no cause the male will fight with her. HUH?? How in the world do they reproduce?? Do they only mate once in a while then fight and kill eachother later?? I don't get it.was the pet store lady wrong??

i know you are receiving many answers all saying something different. Are they all wrong? Well out of most of the answer es i read they all have portions that are right. Yes you can add female Betta's with male bettas, However; that is not a guarantee that they won't fight. To give a chance to the female it is good to have plenty of hiding spots for them to hid and get a break from the male.. How do they breed them it is all in the timing and conditioning. The female isn't added till they are ready to breed and as soon as they spawn and she lays the eggs the female must be taken out or the male may kill her and/or the female will eat the eggs. So you see she wasn't wrong, but she didn't explain why she advised you in the way she did.

The lady in the pet store didn't know what she was talking about. Male bettas only fight with other male bettas - so go ahead and get a female!

Male betta fish only fight with other males. they shounldnt fight with a female.

She's wrong. Male bettas get along fine with female bettas. I used to keep bettas in my big aquarium, along with my other placid fish, a male betta and two or three females. It's only other male bettas that they will fight with, as a rule.
