No complaints, but why doesnt my tank grow algae
Well, it grows a tiny bit of brown algae on one of the tubes and a tiny bit on the glass, but that is it. I hear of all of these problems of it taking over. I have 1 oscar and I never change the water, just add more when the water evaporates. The tank is not clean, lots of leftover food on the bottom. Aren't these the main causes of it? Why then does my tank not grow algae? I even leave the light on from noon to midnight. Is it an enigma or does anyone know why this might be?
Answers:There could be a number of reasons. Lack of light. Lack of nutrients like phosphates, iron.. pH.
PS- Note that you really need to change out some of the water every so often. With a good filter, not having to many fish, or over feeding. Bacteria will convert ammonia to nitrites, and nitrites to nitrates. The problem is nothing converts nitrate into any thing. (Well if you had 10-20 times the mass of green plants that would work.) So nitrates will just build up to toxic levels. The fact that you are growing brown algae indicates low light lighting, and high nitrates.
It probably has to do with your water. There are minerals or trace amounts of chlorine preventing the algae from growing. Also, sunlight has to do with it-- so maybe you're not putting it close to a window?
Wow, but your oscar is being poisoned by you. Would you like to swim around in your own wastes for as long as you have left your fish to??
