Platy dead after 12 hours

Platy dead after 12 hours2007-11-24 23:39:49

I have got a new fresh water tank of 180 litres. Required installation is in place, water is analysed. I got green light from the installer to go ahead. First day I introduced three loaches, 1 gouramy, 1 algae eater. No problems. Third day I added 1 gouramy, 1 loach and 10 platies. 12 hours later now one of the platies is dead, apparently for no reason. I am worried. Should I watch out for any symptom of a disease? What does an expert do in such a case? Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

There are several reasons this would have happened. Worst case scenario, it had a diesease and is contagious. In that case they all die. Other reasons are that it was old, the tank wasn't cycled enough, it didn't adjust well or it was in a serious state of trauma. I work at an aquarium and sometimes the fish there die for no reason. You can't really controll it.

I have been raising fish for the last 13 years and sometimes when transporting fish from one aqarium to another, no matter how many precautions you take, you are just sometimes bound to get casualties in the process. If more than that 1 fish dies I would be more concerened.

here is a website on platies that may be of some use goodluck*

you maybe didnt cycle your tank enough. but i had a 10 gallon tank with 4 platys and now they are all dead in like 2 weeks. i personally woulnt worry about it because its not like you lost a $20 fish. Here they are only about $2. if you notice other fish dead then go talk to the manager of the fish place where you got your fish
I never keep platys any more because they die quickly like yours did sometimes. Possible causes why yours died in 12 hours: most likely - it's a new tank so it's cycling and the ammonia levels are high (platys aren't very hardy fish); or the platy was unhealthy when you bought it - i wouldn't buy fish from walmart, petsmart, pets supplies, etc. Go to a local fish store or a chain that specializes in fish only. But more than likely it was ammonia poisoning
is your tank cycled? What are your water parameters? sometimes you may but a fish at a store that was already sick or the stress from the move
Sometimes fish just die, and there's nothing you can do about it. Just keep an eye on the other fish; I wouldn't worry unless you start losing more.
