How long can a goldfish survive out of water??

Answers:

My goldfish once jumped out of his tank when I was away.I came back to my room and he was crusted and dry, stuck to my dresser. I plopped him back in the tank and after laying on the bottom for a while, he started swimming and was fine! He lived for quite a while, he must have been out of the tank for at least a half hour to get dried and stuck to the dresser.

in the store it should be fine.the reason they didn't want you to touch it, was because you can rub the slime of and the fish will get infections.they most likley got a glove to pick it up.put the cone so noone stepped on it..but i had one jump out..and i know i was gone for atleast 20 min.he was dry,,but after about 1 hour he was fine..

I'm pretty sure it's about 1 or 2 minutes Iv'e had alot of goldfish, I mean ALOT lol. That's sweet that you wanted to help it, I recently had a ghost shrimp that jumped out of a bowl while I was cleaning my tank and he landed in the trash twice and I saved him twice.. I literaly had to dig in my own trash for him! until I put something over the bowl THEY JUMP! =0

Gold fish can survive for some time. The problem is that fall may have resulted in internal injuries. Plus there is the stress involved, loss of slime coat. Basicly the store didn't want to sell you a fish that stood a good chance of dying within a few days. With a cheap fish like a goldfish it's generally just euthanised.

Never touch a fish with your dry hands..it will take scales off of the fish. Typically I will just wet down my hand and pick them up.

believe it or not some fish actually get their oxygen from the top of the water so some fish can live a rather long time out of water, in fact at 6 this morning I had my 7 inch Chinese Algae Eater had jumped out of his tank and was fine after almost 10 Minutes!! and he breathes in the water, although gold fish do get their air at the top it probably would have ended up dying of a fungus and passing the fungus to other fish so don't feel bad because the kid may just happen to love some other fish in there tank and the one she dropped would only make them cry in a day or two

a fish cant live out of water for to long. One reason is that fish have a hard time breathing out of water and second is that their scales will dry up and it will be hard for the fish to move.
