well if you have a small tank, theres not that much you can do to get rid of the stool. Otherwise use a gravel cleaner. You are supposed to leave the light on the whole day but since i only have one fish (orange and yellow mickey mouse platy) i only turn it on when im feeding it. it stimulates feeding too.

i also feed my fish freeze dried bloodworms as a treat once a day.

as for the amount of food heres a guideline:

-feed what they tell you to at first

-if the fish doesnt eat it ALL before it goes to the bottom (a few min), then you're feeding too much. take away a piece.

-if you notice the fish got skinnier, then you're feeding too little

also you'll need to change about 1/4 of the water once every week- 2 weeks

Don't feed the fish any more than it will eat in a few minutes. Change the water at least every month, but only change 30% of it each time. Buy water conditioner (a few dollars) to make the tap water safe. It sounds like you have a goldfish.

If the fish is in a fish bowl instead of a fish tank, then you should get an air pump ($10-20) to keep the water oxygenated, as the surface to volume ratio is not likely sufficient to guarantee enough oxygen exchange.
