Question on betta fish

Question on betta fish2007-11-24 23:39:54

I have very very hard tap water. I've tested it with a tester strip for fish tanks. I've read that sometimes tap water can be too hard to adjust for fish. My question is, how balanced is bottled water (the kind you buy at the store)? I'm not talking distilled, I've heard it has NO nutrients for fish. Is adjustment needed to it to suit a betta fish or is betta water conditioner enough? Thanks!

Answers:

I used bottled water for my Betta fish after having several die in tap water. My last Betta lived for about 3 years.

There is also a tablet you can buy (at walmart or pet supply stores) called tank buddies.it dissolves in the water (tap or bottled) before you add your fish ..it helps to neutralize the ph balance in the water.

I have used the tap water and bottled water along with the betta water conditioner and it seems to work just fine. I have had my fish for over a year.
I use tap water in my fish tank for my betta with a little of the water conditioner and it is fine for him. You can use spring water too probably.
Tap water is fine. They are very hardy. Just condition it first.

Some "spring water" is very rich in minerals (hardness)

Are there any lakes close to you? Take the water from them!
I have kept bettas for a long time using store bottled water.
If you use bottled water I would treat it the same way I would tap water. Let it sit out uncovered (with a wide opening not just in the bottle) for at least 24 hours before using. I would add a water conditioner too, like AquaSafe. You might want to use distilled instead though, but again I would add the conditioner.
Have you ever thought of calling a tropical fish store? I was told that spring or botted water are okay - distilled is not. I would actually check with an expert though to be sure. - Kells
When I had a beta fish I just used a filter on my faucet but if you get bottled water you can buy a chemical to put in the water to make it safe for the fish.
I think you'll be fine with the water conditioner and tap water (if it includes a dechlorinator and a stress reducer/bacteria-stuff)-. Another tip is to always let your tap water sit out for a day or so before you put the fish into it. That helps some of the harsher chemicals evaporate. Get a bottle of decholrinator and a bottle of good bacteria from the pet store..I use stuff called stress coat and stresszyme.there are different types out there that you can choose from. Add them to the water before you put it in the tank.just read the bottle and use the right ammount for the water you are adding. Put the decholrinator in first because cholrine can kill the good bateria in the other bottle. #2 let the water sit in an open container for 24 hours and the bad chemicals will leave the water naturally. You still need to add the good bacteria, but if you leave the water to sit you can skip the decholrinator. Either way, make sure the new water is the same temp and ph of the water in the tank.
