Should I go saltwater

Should I go saltwater2007-11-24 23:40:16

Yes Yes yes go salt! It's wonderful and int he long run easier to maintain, if set up correctly.

Although I can say i love my Tetras and chiclids, so i'll always have a tropical and brackish tank, but man oh man, my salt.(wink)

Go for it!

if you have a 55 gallon tank then no but 56 or higher then yes
if you have deep pockets go for it special lighting filters water chemicals fish aren't too bad i would suggest reef tank lower maintenance also with live rock sometimes you get somthing weird crawling out of the rock
If you are willing to spend the money and time to do it right saltwater fish can be very stunning. If after you look at the prices for a reef tank, lighting, skimmers etc and can't swing it then consider setting up a freshwater african cichlid tank with some of the smaller ones from Lake Tanganyika. They are mostly hardy, can tolerate shells and coral (though you need to avoid sharp ones as they aren't use to those) since they come from alkaline salty water, and there are many with fantastic colors.

Another option, lower cost and not something everyone has would be to start a brackish water tank with monos, scats, chromides, some gobis (bumble bee, dragon fish, knight goby etc), columbian shark cats, archer fish, siameese tiger fish or similar. Of course not all get along so you'd need to ask but most brackish fish are very hardy and there are some real gems in there.
