Should I leave the light on in an aquarium if Im away for a few days2007-11-24 23:40:16

Functionally, to the acquariums health, they offer very little to nothing. The fish don't need the light, however if real plants are used in the acquarium, they may need the light.

In general, leave the light off for at least 8 to 12 hours a day so that it generally simulates the normal day and night cycles that even we are used to. The fish have body clocks also and need to realize that dark period to sleep and/or rest.

If you're going away, I recommend that you leave the light off. It won't hurt the fish, and if real plants are involved they will realize little to no detrimental effect.

Don't over feed the fish before you go away. Doing so will only have potential effects on the chemistry of the tank, and it can also leave the tank fairly "dirty". If you are going to be gone for more than 2 days, find someone to take over your duties. After all, fish are living beings also and they need good constant care.

Leave the light off, the fish don't really care. They can still see enough to swim around even in the dark. also don't leave food in there. Just feed them right before you leave and right when you get back. They can go longer without food than most people think.

Since you can't find the timer, I'd say leave it off. Otherwise he'll come home to a nice algae bloom.

I never turn on lights on my tanks. Only to view inside. Normally, they are off. No lights, no algae. Lights, even fluorescents heat the tank. I rather use heaters. More controlled.
