Something is Swimming with our Betta Help2007-11-24 23:40:04

My daughter has a one Betta in a 5 gal tank. She cleans it weekly. A last month we found little white things floating around in the tank. Took tank complete apart and clean it and the rocks. Well just went in a found they are back. What could this be I haven't never seen anything like this before. We have had fish tanks 4ever. Does anyone know or have any thoughts. I am taking them to the fish store to see if they know.

Answers:

if it is a brand new beta as in you just bought it maybe you got a beta that was pregnant or maybe it got a growth and it fell of

I would have my water tested
do you have alot mosquitos in your area maybe that
Some insect is laying eggs in your tank.

Flies, fruit flies, whatever---cover the tank with mesh screen, and it will be over.

Can you describe the white things? Are they worm like?

They could be harmless roundworms that appear in a tank due to overfeeding.

It sounds like Planaria.
Bettas do have really small baby bettas, so maybe that's what it is. Do you know if it was a female betta? Most people buy the males, so if yours is a male, this is really confusing! As for the mosquitoes, they do lay their larvae in the water. They are black those and usually stay near the water's surface. If you put your finger near them they will wiggle down to the bottom, not swim like a fish. Hope the people at the fish store can give you some further help!
Maybe its parasites. Ich or similar is white in colour and floats around your tank. try adding some aquarium salt.
Most likely planaria or possibly nematodes. Little worm things that usually come out as a result of overfeeding, too much food left on the bottom. They're harmless to the betta, only time they're a problem is when there's eggs, they eat them.
