Bettas (pronounced bet-tah, not bay-tah) only live 2-3 years under very good conditions (and who knows how old they are when you buy them at the store). If yours don't last around a year and a half, you are not taking care of them properly.

They need at least 2-3 gallons of water with a filter and a heater. They should also be given some floating plants as this makes them feel secure when they hide under them. They are tropical fish from southeast Asia and need 78-80 degrees for their water. They are carnivorous and should be fed a high protein, high quality flake food (preferably 45-50% protein). Betta-Min is a good choice (small yellow can).

Never change 100% of their water, just do regular (weekly) partial (25-30%) water changes and they will be healthy and happy for quite a while.

Failing to do any of this for your betta will stress them a lot and the stress will eventually compromise their immune system. Once that happens, they will usually sicken and die.

Crowntails are the best, IMHO, I have three right now in a 30 gallon tank with other fish.
