Weights to tie down plants
Weights to tie down plants2007-11-24 23:09:55
What are those soft, malleable weight that comes with my plant purchase? Is it an inert metal, and what metal is it? And where can I get some lol. Thanks!
Answers:You can buy these in most pet stores, but be careful of the materials they might be made of - older types were made of lead (not good!), but newer ones are a zinc-magnesium alloy which is supposed to be non-toxic.
If your store doesn't carry them, take this in and ask if they could order these for you: http://www.strictlypetsupplies.com/_0301...
I'm not sure as to the type of material, but I know from my experience working in PetSmart, we had tons and tons of extras all the time. I'm sure if you were to go to your local pet store that sells aquatic plants, you should be able to pick some up for free, otherwise, I know they are manufactured for sale and should also be located at any store that sells the aquatic plants.
I got tired of the plants not being seated properly for one reason or another and decided to start putting them inside some of the fake made caves and such. I drilled holes in them large enough to push plant roots through snuggly and set it where the fish can get to it too. It actually looks very pretty and you can get pretty creative doing this too.
I also really love the silk like fake plants that have solid rock like material as their base. I love being able to drop them into the water so easily and you would not believe how many of my family and friends think they are real.
any kind of rocks and some sealant you can get at a petstore but some fish just move them around
Not sure about the metal, but if you can't find any, I've found a good weight for plants is to just use a rubberband or fishing line to tie them to some aquarium-safe pebbles, or driftwood. Most of the time the plants might even root to the pebble or wood (if it's large enough).
these weights are made of nickle copper compound instead of lead the same as lead free solder which is still soft and workable
