What color is the female koi fish2007-11-24 23:40:42Answers:

koi are all different colors. Including the females.

Koi fish come in so many different colors so the females will not be just one color. I'd ask a pet store how to tell if a koi is female or not.
look for a fin on the bottom of the fish called an anal fin it is located just before the anus if it is prominent (i.e. sticks out and is always on display) then it is male.
Contrary to user:ph忙nix's answer it's a little harder then checking the anal fin, though this works in live bearing fish and some tertas and barbs.

Color will not differ from females to males, but body shape is a good way to tell. It's difficult in a pond [when viewing from above] but in a tank where the sides can be seen females will generally have a more rounded belly where males remain streamlined. This is easier to see during breeding and young fish cannot be sexed.

Males can also be seen following females around during breeding.

From Encyclopedia of Koi:

"When males are ready for spawning, they develop breeding tuberdes on the head and pectoral fins, principally along the bones of the fin rays. These breeding tuberdes appear as fine raised spots and could be mistaken for white spot (Ichthyophthirius. The tuberdes are most profuse on the pectoral fins, where they are quite rough to the touch and arranged in fairly regular rows. They are used during breeding, when the male nudges the female with his head and fins to induce her to spawn"
