What do I need to know about setting up an aquarium in my home2007-11-24 23:40:46

Is a salt water tank different from a freshwater tank? Is it more difficult to maintain?

I think a freshwater tank is way easier, but you should get a book and read up on it before you do anything -- I have a copy of Aquariums for Dummies (no kidding), and it helped me a lot.

yes it is more complicated to have saltwater fish, though they are more beautiful. i spent about $120 on a 20 gallon tank and all the little nick nacks. and the fish still died!!

Freshwater tanks are great for begginers! Yes salt water tanks can be more difficult to maintain, the fish are more expensive and most are very delicate. Try getting a nice 5 gallon tank and a male betta!

Salt water tanks are much more complicated to set up and to maintain. The best answers will come from a very reputable aquarium center. Aquariums for Dummies is an excellent read before you ever enter an aquarium center and get sucked into impulse buying!

Salt water is much harder and the fish are much more expensive, so if you have never had one, don't start with a salt water one. You need to know that for each gallon in size the aquarium it will weigh about 10 pounds. So if you set up a 10 gallon aquarium it needs to set on something that will hold 100 pounds and not collapse. If you buy a kit they will have everything you need except the water and fish, usually. You can get them at places like Walmart, Kmart and such. Get the kind of filter that attaches to the side. It works better and is easier to clean. Good luck

salt water is completely different. lots more work to keep a salt water tank at the right levels so that your fish will live.
